Document title vs document name

The document title is what is printed on your PDF; the document name is what you call the design. Here is where each one lives and how to change it.

Updated 3 min read

The two sound alike and are easy to mix up. In short: the document title is printed at the top of the PDF; the document name is the name of the design, and only you see it.

Both belong to a document design, so both are set in Settings → Document designs — but in two different places inside it.

Document name

The document name is the name of the design itself. It exists so you can keep your designs organised when you have more than a few, and it is what the Name column shows in the designs list.

To change it, open the design and edit Document Name in the General panel on the left.

The Invoice Office document design editor with the General panel open on the left and the Document Name field, holding the value Invoice, outlined in red — beside a live preview of the invoice

You can also rename a design without opening it: from the designs list, use the row’s Action → Modify, which takes the Name along with the design’s document type and language.

So an invoice design can be called Invoice (test customer) while the title printed on the PDF still reads Invoice. Your customer never sees the document name.

Document title

The document title is the heading printed on the document PDF — create an invoice and the title on the PDF reads Invoice. The designs list shows the current one in its Title column.

It is not in the General panel. It is one row in the design’s Field names and values:

  1. Open the design and find the Field names and values card at the bottom of the left column.
  2. Switch Use default design off. Modify Field names and values appears.
  3. Click it, find the Document title row, and type the heading you want in its Field nameFee note instead of Invoice, for example.
  4. Save with Modify Field names and values.
The Modify Field names and values window in Invoice Office, listing Billing address, Shipping address, Customer Number, Delivery date, document date and Due date — the Document title row is outlined in red with Fee note typed into its Field name and a Show default value switch beside it

Document title is the only row in that table with a Show default value switch and a Field default value of its own; the other rows just rename their labels — see How to change the label name.

Because designs are held per language, set the title on the design for each language you send documents in.
